A relative of Palestinians Sobhi al-Batsh, a member of Hamas's armed wing the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, and Issam al-Batsh, a senior member of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, follows their funeral procession in Gaza City on December 8, 2011. The two Gaza militants were killed in an Israeli strike, Palestinian medics said, with Israel saying one of them had planned a deadly bombing in Eilat in 2007.

Taghrid Al Alloul, a breast cancer patient, and her husband talking to Dr. Nael Skeik, Director of the oncology pharmacy at Gaza Shifa Hospital. Taghrid received treatment in Egypt, but she still needs surgery, which cannot be done without taking Taxol, an essential drug for her treatment. Without this medication, she is likely to suffer from complications after the surgery.

68-year-old Ghazi Al-De'bala arrives at Shifa hospital from Beit Lahia, North of Gaza City. He suffers from kidney failure since 2005 and has to come to Al-Shifa Hospital, the largest medical complex and central hospital in Gaza in order to receive dialysis.

Worried and anxious, Taghrid awaits an answer from the pharmacy to know whether she will have her dose or not. Unfortunately, the drug was not available. "I am afraid to lose what I've achieved in terms of treatment because of the unavailability of medications in Gaza", she says.

Taghrid is checking whether the medication she needs is available or not at the oncology pharmacy. Health facilities struggle to provide health services to 1.5 million people in the Gaza Strip. The shortage of some basic drugs and disposables required for emergency cases, limits the continuous provision of care to patients.

She came to get her dose of Taxol drug for her cancer treatment. She knows that if she does not get it within 10 days, her chances for cure will get smaller.

During the haemodialysis session, Ghazi has mixed feelings: of happiness because he managed to have the session today, and of concern about the next session. A few weeks ago, ICRC managed to facilitate the supply of 480 bloodline units for Gaza hospitals. This quantity was sufficient only for two days as the dialysis unit in Shifa hospital deals with at least 120 patients per day.

Assisted by his son, Ghazi has to come from Beit Lahia to Shifa hospital in Gaza City to receive haemodialysis three days every week. The dialysis machines are not available at the hospitals of Gaza North, which requires that patients like Ghazi travel from the north to Gaza City, incurring travel expenses three times a week to undergo haemodialysis.

Taghrid sadly leaves the hospital with her husband. The alternative for her is either to be referred to Egypt to get the treatment, a procedure which takes several weeks or even months, or to decide to do the surgery, without the medication, which will put her life in danger.

Ghazi gets ready for his dialysis session. The dialysis department must provide daily services. Some essential drugs like Erythropoietin and disposables, like bloodlines, are in constant shortage at the Ministry of Health drug store, leaving patients obsessed with the possibility of losing their lives, and the doctors with a feeling helplessness.
